African-Americans and Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Americans, killing nearly half a million people each year.

In African-Americans, heart disease is even more common and more deadly than it is for other ethnic groups. For African-American women, the risk of death from heart disease is especially high.

Experts suspect that most cases of heart disease in African-Americans can be traced to their high rates of hypertension (high blood pressure).
