How Einstein's Home Dialysis Program Works
Program Requirements
There are a few basic requirements you must meet in order to be considered a candidate for home dialysis.
- You or your dialysis partner must be able to physically operate the equipment.
- You or your dialysis partner must be able to read the training materials and write so supplies can be ordered and paperwork
completed.
- You must be committed to following the treatment regimen recommended by your doctor.
If you meet these requirements, your nephrologist may refer you to one of our nephrology nurses for a consultation. During
the consultation, you will:
- Learn about the program and medical staff
- Tour the outpatient unit
- Receive a demonstration of how peritoneal therapy works
- Be paired with a current patient in the Home Dialysis Program so you have a “buddy” to call when you have questions
Benefits of Home Dialysis
- Home dialysis offers the convenience and flexibility of making your own treatment schedule. Your doctor will tell you how
many days a week you should do the treatment and for how many hours on those days.
- Home dialysis may enable you to hold a full-time job since you won’t have to take four hours out of your schedule several
times a week to go to a dialysis center.
- You may enjoy a better quality of life since you will have more time to spend with family or doing activities you enjoy. We
can even help arrange for you to travel while maintaining your regular dialysis treatments.
- You may have the option of having more frequent or extended dialysis, which can lead to:
- Increased flexibility with diet
- Improved blood pressure control
- Reduced fatigue and nausea
- Reduced need for medications
- Reduced need for hospitalization
