Kidney Disease: Are You At Risk?

Do you know if you are at risk for kidney disease? Take our quiz and find out.

  1. Do you have diabetes?
  2. Do you have high blood pressure?
  3. Do you have a family history of kidney disease?
  4. Do you have a history of urinary tract problems such as infections, urinary tract stones or obstructions?
  5. Do you have an autoimmune disease such as systemic lupus erythematous (a connective tissue disease)?
  6. Do you have:
    a. sickle cell anemia
    b. cancer
    c. AIDS
    d. hepatitis C
    e. congestive heart failure
  7. Do you smoke?
  8. Are you African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander or Native American?
  9. Are you over age 60?
  10. Did you weigh less than 5 pounds when you were born?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you may be at risk for chronic kidney disease. While some risk factors cannot be helped (age, birth weight, family history and ethnicity, for example), others can. For instance, if you have diabetes, you can work with your doctor to keep your blood sugar under control. Similarly, if you have high blood pressure, you can work with your doctor to control it.
