Santiago Munoz, MD, FACP

Santiago Munoz, MD, FACP is a liver disease expert who has a special interest in chronic virus hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, biliary cirrhosis, hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, and other liver disorders. Dr. Munoz is actively engaged in numerous clinical studies and research projects involving liver failure and chronic hepatitis C virus. He was named 2003 Physician of the Year by the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Liver Foundation. Dr. Munoz was also recently named among Philadelphia magazine's "Top Docs."

Dr. Munoz, who has a national reputation as an expert in hepatobiliary disease, has been called upon to serve on committees of scientific organizations, and has lectured extensively on hepatobiliary disorders in the US and abroad. With more than one hundred publications to his credit, Dr. Munoz has also written numerous book chapters on liver disorders. He has delivered more than 100 scientific presentations at professional societies and serves as a peer reviewer for major scientific journals, including the Annals of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

In the area of research, Dr. Munoz is currently principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health grant for the study of acute liver failure.

Dr. Munoz earned his medical degree in 1978 from the University of Chile School of Medicine. His postdoctoral training includes a fellowship in medicine and pharmacology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and an internship and residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Munoz trained in liver diseases with world-renowned hepatologist Willis Maddrey, MD.

Dr. Munoz is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. His specialty is hepatology.

Kenneth Rothstein, MD, Associate Director, Albert Einstein Center for Liver Disease

Kenneth Rothstein, MD, is Associate Director of Albert Einstein Center for Liver Disease. He completed his residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospital, Atlanta and his fellowship at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia. Dr. Rothstein is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. His specialty is hepatology.

Dr. Rothstein was named Physician of the Year by the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Liver Foundation in 1998.

Victor Araya, MD, Attending Physician, Albert Einstein Center for Liver Disease

Victor Araya, MD, is a board certified hepatologist with expertise in the management of chronic hepatitis C infection, the most recent antiviral therapies and liver transplantation. Prior to coming to Einstein, Dr. Araya served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he later became the Director of the Clinical Trials Unit in the Division of Transplantation Medicine.

Cosme Manzarbeitia, MD, FACS, Chairman of Transplant Surgery; Director, Liver Transplant Program, Albert Einstein Medical Center

Cosme Manzarbeitia, MD, FACS, specializes in hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation. He is Chairman of Albert Einstein Medical Center's Division of Transplant Surgery and Director of the Center for Organ Transplantation. Dr. Manzarbeitia specializes in liver transplantation and leads one of the region's busiest liver transplantation centers. He is credited with making Albert Einstein's program the fastest growing liver transplantation program in the region -- performing more than 60 transplants annually.

In 2001, Dr. Manzarbeitia was named Surgeon of the Year by the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Liver Foundation. He serves as Chairman of the Board for the Gift of Life Donor Program, the organ and tissue donor program for Eastern Pennsylvania. He was also named among Philadelphia magazine's "Top Docs" in 2002.

Dr. Manzarbeitia earned his medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain, and completed his internship at Prosper Hospital, Recklinghausen, Germany. He completed his residency at North General Hospital/Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, and his fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

He is board certified in surgery and transplantation. His specialties and areas of interest are multi-organ transplantation (liver, kidney and pancreas), hepatobiliary surgery and general surgery.

David J. Reich, MD, FACS, Associate Director, Liver Transplant Program, Albert Einstein Medical Center

David J. Reich, MD, FACS, is the Associate Director of the Liver Transplant Program. Dr Reich specializes in major liver surgery, general surgery in patients with liver disease, and complex liver transplantation.

Dr. Reich completed his American Society of Transplant Surgeons-approved Multi-Organ Transplant Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He is certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Reich is a founding member of the Delaware Valley Liver Transplantation Society. He serves on the Education Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, on the Liver/Intestine Committee of the Gift of Life Donor Program and as a member of numerous other professional societies. In 2004, he was named Transplant Surgeon of the Year by the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Liver Foundation.

Dr. Reich has published extensively, lectured nationally and internationally and made numerous television appearances regarding various research initiatives and clinical aspects of liver surgery and transplantation.
