How can I prevent carpal tunnel syndrome?

If you spend a lot of time at the computer or are engaged in a job requiring repetitive hand movements, Einstein's hand specialists recommend the following tips:

  • Try to keep your wrist straight and relaxed while typing, writing, drawing or playing a musical instrument. Be sure to take frequent breaks.
  • Use a wrist support pad with your computer keyboard to help keep your wrist straight.
  • Apply ice or a cold pack to the palm side of the wrist for five to ten minutes as needed for pain.
  • Seek treatment immediately at the first signs of a problem.
