Amputation - General Information

Amputation — loss of a limb or body part — can occur due to many causes and at any age.

The number of persons with amputation worldwide is not currently tracked by any organization. In the United States, an estimated 350,000 people are living with limb amputation, with approximately 135,000 new amputations occurring each year.

A variety of factors determine which part of a limb is amputated.
