Survivors of stroke and traumatic brain injury often live with significant disability. One of the most devastating, long-term
disabilities is aphasia. The communications disorder affects a person's ability to speak, read, write and understand language.
More than one million Americans live with aphasia–more than with Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis or muscular dystrophy.
People who have aphasia may be unable to express basic needs–such as hunger–or they may use the wrong words or forget words–even
the names of their children. They may be unable to read a book or write their names. Frustration and depression can easily
occur as individuals struggle to communicate.
