Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute (MRRI) annually accepts applications for a two-year research fellowship. Recruitment begins in January for positions filled from May to September.

MRRI provides an opportunity for mutual collaboration with senior investigators in the field; educational conferences, lab meetings, and weekly patient rounds; and access to a variety of patient populations. Requirements include a PhD in a relevant area of cognitive neuroscience or rehabilitation, training in research design and applied experience in data collection and analysis. Projects are funded through federal agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, as well as private foundations. Individuals with the following interests are invited to apply for the fellowships:

Attention processes --  Investigation of attentional functions in the following areas, with opportunities for cross-collaboration:

  • Executive function and dysexecutive syndromes, e.g., attention and working memory in TBI and stroke patients using naturalistic action and dual-task paradigms;
  • Hemispatial attention, neglect and selection of objects for action in stroke patients; and/or
  • Visual attention in TBI patients using gaze-recording techniques.
    A major grant-funded initiative will develop models of cognitive rehabilitation of spatial and temporal attention disorders through international collaboration.

Language -- Basic and applied studies of language processing, particularly involving neurological populations, with special emphasis on:

  • Phonological structure and processing;
  • Syntax;
  • Verbs and verb-argument structure; and/or
  • Computational models involving corpus analysis or simulations of experimental data.

Neural networks
-- Applications of neural networks to both theoretical and applied problems in rehabilitation research, including:

  • Cognitive processing and/or acquired language disorders, e.g., in stroke patients;
  • Relationship between areas of muscle weakness and compensatory musculoskeletal overuse symptoms in polio and other neurologic diseases; and/or
  • Prediction of functional outcomes in rehabilitation patients.

Mentors include Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute staff John Whyte, MD, PhD, Director; Myrna Schwartz, PhD, Associate Director; Laurel Buxbaum, PsyD; Branch Coslett, MD; Tessa Hart, PhD; and Mary Klein, PhD

Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute is a part of Albert Einstein Healthcare Network--a member of the Jefferson Health System.
