Achieving Greater Independence

A stroke can leave a person with paralysis, speech, behavior, memory and other problems. MossRehab's rehabilitation professionals work with patients to help them regain the skills and abilities necessary for performing everyday activities, maximizing their independence.

Mobility/Paralysis

  • Physical therapists evaluate and treat problems such as motion, balance and coordination. They then help patients regain mobility through exercise and training.
  • Occupational therapists help stroke survivors learn to perform daily activities such as eating, bathing, writing or cooking.
  • Adaptive Designs for Living is a service that provides recommendations to make the home or work site more accessible for individuals with physical disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs.
  • On-site orthotics service enables MossRehab to manufacture devices, such as braces, for patients who need them. Because the service is available on our main campus, we can ensure proper fit and provide prompt adjustments when needed.
  • Neuro-orthopaedic Program provides specialized care for individuals with severely limited use of their arms and legs as a result of neurological disorders.
  • Diagnostic laboratories allow physicians to identify and treat conditions associated with stroke. These include the Gait and Motion Analysis Lab, Motor Control Analysis Lab and the Electrodiagnostic Center.

Language and Communication

  • MossRehab's Center for Communication Disorders is one of the largest centers in the region. It provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for patients with swallowing, hearing, speech, language and other communication disorders.
  • MossRehab Aphasia Center treats communication problems that result from injury to the brain, usually from stroke.

Cognitive Disorders

Stroke also can cause cognitive deficits: problems with remembering, paying attention, solving problems, organizing or making plans. The Stroke and Neurological Diseases Program Cognitive Track is designed to help patients with these problems.

Other Stroke Rehabilitation Services

  • Neuropsychological and Vocational Evaluation and Counseling assists patients who want to return to work or school.
  • MossRehab Driving School is a state-licensed program--and one of the most comprehensive in the Philadelphia region.
