
Treating Tobacco Dependence: Healthcare Provider Training is a four-hour didactic, lecture-based program intended to provide
healthcare professionals who work directly with patients the information and tools they need to incorporate the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services
Clinical Practice Guidelines into their practices. This program is CME-certified for four continuing education units for physicians. CEUs for other healthcare
providers may also apply. The program is designed to meet Pennsylvania Department of Health requirements for continuing education
and training for approved tobacco cessation providers.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:

Understand tobacco dependence as a chronic condition requiring repeated intervention from individual healthcare providers
across the healthcare delivery system.

Develop an understanding of the complexities of tobacco use behavior.

Describe basic behavioral and cognitive coping techniques that can be taught to patients who are trying to quit smoking.

Identify and detail FDA-approved smoking-cessation medications.

Develop a strategy to efficiently implement the CDC Clinical Practice Guidelines for tobacco use and dependence into each
encounter with a patient.
