Board-certified neonatologists, neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, registered pharmacists, residents and neonatal fellows
staff the Division of Neonatology at Albert Einstein Medical Center. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 27-bed level
III unit with over 350 admissions a year.
Infants cared for at Einstein Medical Center have a range of medical and surgical problems, with many requiring the input
of wide array of disciplines. Premature infants born at or after 23 weeks gestation are admitted to the NICU.
All forms of neonatal illnesses are managed in the NICU, except infants who require major surgery. Healthy full-term infants
and those who require antibiotics or light therapy for jaundice are cared for in a separate nursery.
Family-oriented care is strongly emphasized with participation of a full-time social worker. The NICU has devoted a private
room as the "care-by-parent room" where families may spend a night with their infant prior to discharge.
The Neonatology Outpatient Service provides multispecialty care for infants weighing less than 1500 grams at birth as well
as those infants with problems that might affect development. A neonatologist, developmental specialist and a nutritionist
staff the clinic.
