Pride Program - LGBTQ+ Health
Our Statement on PA Bill HB972
We, the healthcare professionals of Einstein Healthcare Network’s Pride Program, which serves the sexual and gender diverse community, vigorously oppose any and all legislation that deems that vulnerable community as second-class or dangerous. Therefore, we are speaking out against Pennsylvania HB972, a bill designed to prohibit trans athletes from participating in high school and/or collegiate sports according to their gender identity.
Gender diverse and trans children exist. They are in our families, our places of worship, our schools, our hospitals and doctor’s offices, our communities, and, yes, our sports teams.
Among the advantages of sports participation are inclusivity, goal setting and achievement, improving mental and physical well-being, and camaraderie. Excluding trans athletes from sports not only prevents them from experiencing those benefits, but also limits cisgender athletes the opportunity to benefit. Any bill designed to prevent participation is harmful to trans athletes, cisgender athletes and the greater community.
As the American Academy of Pediatrics states, “politics has no place here. Transgender children, like all children, just want to belong.” We are determined to fight for their right to belong.
