Neurology - Curriculum

The Einstein Healthcare Network Neurology Residency Program is structured to ensure that each resident has the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, clinical skills, interpersonal skills, professional attitudes and behaviors, and experience required to become an outstanding neurologist. The neurology residency program provides a comprehensive core curriculum in neurology. This is accomplished through supervised daily patient care activities as well as high-quality didactic educational experiences. For each required and elective rotation, our written curriculum defines the educational purpose, training objectives, principal teaching methods, educational content, educational methods, and evaluation methods. A sample block rotation schedule of the three-year training experience within neurology can be viewed under clinical rotations.

The didactic curriculum is a three-year cycle of lectures with the first year focused on neuroanatomy, the second year on neurophysiology and the third year on neurochemistry and neuropharmacology. Neurodevelopment also is included.

Neurology Grand Rounds or Neuroradiology conferences occur every Friday morning. These Friday sessions are mandatory for all residents and faculty. Each second and third year resident will be expected to present one in-depth discussion at Grand Rounds each year.

Noon conferences are held daily consisting of clinical case discussions using the AAN Continuum, Journal Club, and electrophysiology, ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, psychiatry or basic science lectures.

Residents will be required to submit at least one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal during their second or third year of neurology residency. Residents are encouraged to participate in an ongoing research project or to generate their own plan and project. Residents are also encouraged to participate in ongoing multi-center trials for patient recruitment and assessment when feasible.

Sample Rotation Schedule

We used the (x+ y) model for our clinical rotations. We meet the ACGME requirement of at least 12 weeks of Elective over 3 years, 12 weeks Pediatric neurology over 3 years, 4 weeks of Psychiatry, 6 months of Inpatient service.

Outpatient Continuity Clinic is held every 6 weeks at least and a total of 40 clinics per year for each resident.

37 weeks are divided up between essential services (Inpatient, Consult, Inpatient senior, Night Float, Admitting Resident, Child Neurology and Inpatient Attending rotations) and the elective services (EMG, EEG, Psychiatry, Elective of choice, Neuropathology. Radiology-Pathology).

10 weeks of clinic block divided between multispecialty clinic in the AM (Neuromuscular, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Dementia - in plan) and continuity clinic in the PM.

3 weeks of vacation each year and 1 week during the Holiday season.
