Emergency Medicine

Einstein Healthcare Network operates three Emergency Departments, located in North Philadelphia, East Norriton (Montgomery) and Elkins Park.

Our Locations

If you are experiencing severe COVID-19 symptoms – intense chest pain or significant difficulty breathing, for example – please visit one of the Einstein Healthcare Network emergency departments for care. If your symptoms are milder, you can also contact your primary care physician or JeffConnect for virtual care. If you are NOT experiencing symptoms and just want a COVID test, please use testing sites other than emergency departments. There are numerous testing sites throughout the Philadelphia region, including Einstein's own facility on our Philadelphia campus. Learn more.

Einstein uses state-of-the art technology to provide optimal care for our patients. Our physicians are all board certified in Emergency Medicine and are committed to our community and our patients. We are constantly striving to provide the best in Emergency Care with compassion and respect. Current best practices include:

  • Split-Flow Process: A split-flow process places patients into different care streams according to the level of nursing care required. While every patient who comes to the Emergency Department is seen by physicians and/or physician assistants, not every person’s situation requires a bed. Some patients can be seen in comfortable patient rooms with TVs and recliners. Regardless of care stream, most patients are treated within 90 minutes of arrival.
  • Door to CT Scan: Einstein delivers CT scans for people exhibiting new stroke symptoms in as little as 10 minutes from presentation at the door.
  • Door to Balloon Time: During cardiac events, every second counts. The Einstein team moves patients from ambulance to lifesaving intervention in under 90 minutes.
  • Fast Track: Einstein’s Fast Track area provides rapid care for people who have low need for nursing intervention before being seen by a physician. Located alongside Einstein’s Emergency Department, Fast Track offers high-quality, walk-in medical care for minor, non-urgent healthcare needs such as ankle sprains.
  • Our Nurses: As a Magnet® recognized healthcare organization, our Emergency Department nurses are committed to the highest level of excellence. Learn more about Einstein Nursing here.
  • Research: Einstein’s dedicated full-time research assistants work tirelessly to advance care protocols, treatments and operational procedures.
  • Sepsis: Einstein’s physicians have developed protocols to monitor for early signs that minimize the effect of sepsis/septic shock in the Emergency Department.
  • Emergency Medical Services: Einstein’s emergency services extend beyond hospital walls, lending personnel, expertise, guidance and interventions for disaster response situations including urban search and rescue, mass casualty situations, field triage and any incidents that may require medical command.

Technology

Einstein’s Emergency Departments lead the region with state-of-the-art monitoring for care. All innovations are designed to reduce treatment time for trauma, stroke and cardiac patients. Technology tools include:

  • State-of-the-art CT scanner based near the Emergency Department
  • Video-assisted intubation and laryngoscopy
  • State-of-the-art emergency bedside ultrasound equipment
  • Point-of-care testing
  • Electronic medical records

Einstein’s Transfer Center is designed to ensure that patients from referring hospitals have 24/7 access to the appropriate level and type of high-quality care in an expeditious manner. Referring hospitals may begin the transfer process by calling 1-833-EHN-STAT (1-833-346-7828).

When a referring facility calls, an Einstein Coordinator will gather the following information:

  • Patient’s name and date of birth
  • Diagnosis and reason for transfer
  • Clinical service requested
  • Type of floor needed
  • Hospital name, unit, bed number and sending unit phone/fax
  • Referring physician’s name and phone number

When all information is received, the Coordinator will request a call back number or immediately connect the referring hospital to an accepting physician and nursing supervisor.

It is the responsibility of the referring hospital to arrange transportation for the patient to Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia.

Einstein Crisis Response Center (CRC) treats mental and behavioral health crisis emergencies with psychiatric coverage 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Contact us at 215-951-8300. We are located at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia.
