Einstein Healthcare Network’s Center for Advanced Liver Disease and Transplantation offers comprehensive and compassionate treatment of liver disorders. Our multidisciplinary approach includes nutritionists, behavioral health specialists, social workers, surgeons and physicians who work together to heal and rehabilitate patients.

For adult liver transplants, Einstein’s liver transplant program consistently has one of the highest one-year patient and graft survival in Philadelphia, and the program is the only hospital in the region with an inpatient unit solely dedicated to the treatment of liver diseases.

Our surgeons use the latest video-assisted technology to offer both traditional and minimally-invasive surgical techniques for patients in need of a liver transplant procedure.

Einstein specializes in two types of liver transplantation:

Deceased Donor Liver Transplant

Deceased liver donors have previously opted to donate their organs or their family has made the decision to donate their organs so someone else will have a better life. Once removed, the acquired liver must be transplanted within 24 hours.

Deceased Donor Partial Liver Transplant

Partial liver transplant, also known as a split liver transplant, is the division of a donor’s liver and transplant to two separate recipients. Both portions of the donated liver will regrow and adjust to each recipient’s body.

Day of Liver Transplant Surgery

When a donor liver becomes available and allocated to you, Einstein’s clinical coordinator will call you and arrange for you to come in immediately to prepare for surgery. Liver transplant surgery typically takes between four to eight hours, depending on your medical condition. Transplant recipients typically remain in the hospital for five days following surgery.
