MossRehab Ranked Among Top Ten Facilities in Nation by U.S. News & World Report

Jul 27 2021

Best Hospitals U.S. News and World Report Rehabilitation 2021-2022

MossRehab, the renowned 121-year-old physical and cognitive rehabilitation arm of Einstein Healthcare Network, has again been named by U.S. News & World Report as a Top Ten rehabilitation facility in the country, ranking 9th, and is again the top ranked rehab facility in Pennsylvania for diagnoses including spinal cord injury, stroke, amputation, and traumatic brain injury. This is the twenty-eighth time MossRehab has made the list.

In the past, U.S. News has relied solely on expert opinion for its rankings. But this year, according to U.S. News, its new “Best Hospitals” methodology incorporates objective measures into the calculation while (at least temporarily) continuing to rely partially on expert opinion. The new rankings focus on what U.S. News views as “high acuity” rehabilitation care, concentrated on traumatic brain injury (TBI), traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI), and stroke.

Specifically, the new methodology breaks down as follows:

*Expert opinion (50%)

*Select Outcomes-Based Measures on IRF Compare (20%)

*Volume Conditions for Stroke, TBI and TSCI as reported on IRF Compare (10%)

*Certain Patient Services Reported on the American Hospital Association Annual Survey (6%)

* Certain Advanced Technologies Reported on the American Hospital Association Annual Survey (6%)

*Select Patient Safety Process Measures Reported on IRF Compare (5%)

*Designation as a National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research Model System for SCI, TBI or Burns (2%)

*CARF International Accreditation (2%)

MossRehab’s outcomes--higher patient satisfaction rates and patients having better scores in functional improvement (regaining mobility and self -care faster) than other rehabilitation providers-- is a result of MossRehab’s unique ability to pair the expertise of clinicians with more pioneering rehabilitation robotics and technologies than any other facility in the United States.

And over the last year and a half, MossRehab has also demonstrated its ability to innovate and adapt by creating a rehabilitation unit specifically for patients with COVID-19. The unit, called CORE+ (COVID-19 + rehabilitation) is believed to the first such unit created in the United States and continues to treat patients during the ongoing pandemic.

MossRehab’s patients also continue to benefit from the theory-driven research and clinical-focused treatments derived at the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute which focuses on three main areas: Cognitive Neuroscience and Rehabilitation, Traumatic Brain Injury Treatments and Outcomes and Movement Science and Mobility Rehabilitation.

"We are extremely grateful for being recognized by U.S. News and World Report again as one of “America's Best” rehabilitation facilities," said MossRehab Chief Operating Officer, Thomas Smith. "This national recognition is a testimony not only to MossRehab's commitment to our over 120-year history and mission to provide high-quality services and experiences that result in the very best outcomes, but also to our dedication to improving the lives of persons with disabilities through education, advocacy, research and innovative care. "

Every year, MossRehab treats nearly 2,800 inpatients at five locations, including its flagship, 130 bed facility in Elkins Park, PA, and at Doylestown Hospital, Jefferson Bucks County in Langhorne, PA, MossRehab Tabor Road and Jefferson Frankford in Philadelphia. In addition, MossRehab provides 190,000 outpatient visits each year at 14 locations and community programs throughout the Greater Delaware Valley including Philadelphia, Collegeville, Norristown, Plymouth Meeting, Jenkintown, King of Prussia, Lansdale, East Norriton in Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware.
