How Do Fillers Work?

Injectable skin care treatments are used to temporarily diminish or eliminate facial lines and wrinkles.

Dermal filler is a special material that is injected below the surface of the skin to fill in wrinkles or lines, or to plump up lips or cheeks. Results can be seen almost immediately after the procedure, and depending upon the material used, can last from six months to several years.

A toxin that is injected into facial muscles to relax lines and wrinkles. Results can be seen within a few hours of the procedure and last between three and six months.

For either procedure, you will be seated in a reclining chair and your doctor will mark the areas to be injected. Your skin will be numbed with a cold compress, a special cream, or anesthetic (depending upon the procedure). A thin needle will be used for a few injections over about a 10-minute period of time.

What Can I Expect During and After the Procedure?

Your physician will provide you with detailed information about your procedure, but in general:

  • You may feel some discomfort at the injection sites during the procedure, and mild numbness and tingling around the injection sites after the treatment. These are only temporary.
  • After injectable filler treatment, you should avoid wearing makeup for about 12 hours.
  • Avoid rubbing the injection site for 12 hours after treatment.

Bruising is always a possibility with any injection.  Avoid aspirin or any medications that are considered blood thinners for about one week prior to your procedure.
