How Do Topical Skin Rejuvenation Treatments Work?
The effects of aging, sun exposure, illness and heredity can contribute to wrinkles, pigment changes, acne scars and loose skin tone. Medical skin rejuvenation treatments are highly effective in restoring the skin's youthful appearance.
Your physician will discuss which treatment or combination of treatments would be best to meet your needs. These can include:
Topical treatments- These treatments can include a combination of prescriptive and non-prescriptive topical creams and gels with high levels of active ingredients. These topical treatments work to protect your skin and improve its texture and appearance.
Chemical peels -These treatments, which are generally applied over a series of appointments, use a combination of medically approved chemicals that penetrate deep into the skin to exfoliate and induce collagen regeneration.
Laser treatment - By using special computer-generated laser wavelengths of light, your plastic surgeon can quickly and comfortably eliminate pigmented spots and shrink tiny spider veins. The procedure stimulates healthy new collagen, which is vital to skin elasticity.
Dermabrasion - For this procedure, your plastic surgeon will use a special rotating instrument to gently remove the uneven outer layer of skin to encourage skin regrowth.
What Can I Expect During and After the Procedure?
Skin rejuvenation treatments may include several different types of procedures over a period of time. Your physician will provide you with detailed information about what to expect during and after each procedure appointment, but in general:
- Depending upon the type of rejuvenation treatment, you may be given a local anesthetic before your procedure.
- Your physician will explain what you can expect directly after your treatment and how long it will take before you begin to notice a change.
Do not use exfoliating agents on treated skin, and always wear sunscreen on treated areas.
