Diagnosis and Treatment

Vascular disease is slow and progressive and there are often no symptoms until a heart attack or stroke happens. That's why it is important to have annual checkups with your doctors. Early diagnosis and treatment is vital.

There are different types of vascular disease, including:

  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Peripheral arterial occlusive disease
  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Carotid disease
  • Venous conditions

If left untreated, vascular disease can result in:

  • Heart attack, blocked blood flow to the heart that damages the heart muscle.
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA), a temporary interruption in the blood supply to the brain
  • Stroke, interruption of the blood flow to the brain that can cause lasting paralysis, brain damage and death.
  • Limb amputation due to tissue death in the limb.

Family history and risks like obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol can contribute to vascular disease.
